There are some stories that managed to haunt the dreams and imagination of generations. Escape gaming has borrowed elements from several horror classics and it was greatly influenced by the genre itself. If you feel up to it, read one of the following books!
A true master of the horror genre is without doubt H. P. Lovecraft. The series of stories written by him are still the basic and most frightening of all. In works like Call of Cthulhu or the Dunwich Horror, Lovecraft tells tales of beings much greater in size and power than humans. There’s little we can do to avoid tragedy when these creatures are released or awaken from the long slumber. His works can be described as cosmic horror, giving a deep feeling of nothingness and insignificance to the reader, who is only a mortal human being in the immense universe of cosmic beings, who can annihilate us whenever they wish.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is another masterwork of the horror genre. Though Stoker didn’t invent vampire fiction, his work is still the most powerful and embedded piece in our culture. His version has a strong influence of gore, horror and romance molded into a strange and shocking blend of vampire story. Dracula became an instant classic and a critical success upon its publication and remains widely popular among readers today.
You’ve probably seen the movie Exorcist, but the novel of the same name written by William Peter Blatty is a real classic. When 12-year-old Regan MacNeil gets possessed by unknown otherworldly forces the family turns to the church for help. Inspired by real events, the frightening yet amazing story of demonic possessions and the fight for the girl’s life is simply astonishing. Read it to believe it!
Franz Kafka’s work, the Trial is more than 100 years old but still captures the imagination of readers. In a future bureaucratic state our protagonist is K, who is under trial and is powerless to do anything. Kafka’s nightmare dwells upon a basic human feeling: powerlessness. The state of being when one has no influence on his/her own fate is probably the darkest side of the human condition.
As you can see, there are plenty of works to choose from, and our list is far from comprehensive. If you like the genre, make sure to try escape gaming, since it gives you the excitement and fear that permeate horror novels. Book your game today on our site!
